Hello. While I have seen the term used for Dymags such as Series I and Series II wheels, that does not really make sense or really say anything to describe them.

That said, the Magnesium Dymag (of England) wheels for Corvettes were as follows: (all are 5-spoke design)

Used on the Callaway Corvette:

- 16" dark slate with some being painted. Very rare, these were optional on the 87 Callaway Corvettes
- 17" Silver. These were 17x9.5 (measured 10" lip to lip) and have CALLAWAY on one spoke, and DYMAG On an opposing spoke. They utilized the 88/89 17" center caps.

As fitted to the Challenge Corvettes:

Avail. to race teams, MOST cars wore these at some point - some may NOT have...
- 17" Silver or 17" White, depending upon the year of the car (88=s 89=w)
The wheels were SIMILAR to the CALLAWAY wheels BUT, they said CORVETTE on the one spoke, and DYMAG on the other. The font(s) used were different than CALLAWAY Dy's and the 17" Center cap was again used to conceal the lug nuts. These wheels are known, as "Challenge Dymags."
- Also avail. in this style, was a wider 17x11 "Challenge Dymag"
Mid America Designs (now Motorworks) sold these wheels in their catalog, as they were a primary sponsor of the series.

- On Escort Racers, the 16" Dymag has been fitted to some cars, for some races.

Finally, another "Corvette design" dymag was offered through Dymags reseller network.
It was 17x9.5 or 17x11 and featured a curved spoke (convex looking at the face of the rim) with an open lug area design. They used a standard silver centercap from a Corvette and were sold thorugh the late 90's.

I hope this information is of help. Cool

Over the years, I have had an opportunity to closely examine over (35) different Corvette Challenge Cars, including my own two cars, and I have seen (2) different versions of Dymag wheels for each year, 1988 and 1989.

The 1988 Dymag wheels were completely machined including the Dymag and Corvette logos, then powder coated a SILVER/GRAY and sprayed with a lacquer clear coat. The color differed somewhat between lots.

The other subtle difference is that some early wheels were NOT drilled to accept the pin that locks the factory hub cap into the counterbore of the wheel, even though both wheels had the tapped hole to attach the hub cap. I have seen the undrilled version on a 1988 Challenge car that was never raced and a few other cars. Mid America offered the drilled version in there catalog for some time in the 80's.

The 1989 Dymag wheels were powder coated WHITE without a clear coat. Most of the these wheels were completely machined including a counterbore and pin hole, and were tapped to accept the hub cap.

However, a few wheels were delivered that did NOT have a boss cast into the wheel to accept a tapped hole for the hub cap screw. These wheels were NOT machined on the outer face of the spokes, were NOT counterbored to accept the hub cap and did NOT have the Corvette or Dymag logos. The spokes had a "as cast" surface. I have seen one of these on the 1989 black challenge car that was not raced and I have one one on my own 1989 car.

In 1991 I called Dymag and asked them why these wheels were on some Challenge Cars. The answer was " I guess some of them got out".

I hope this helps to answer your question.

Curt

I landed a set of rough cast Dymags, slate gray and tapped for caps. These have no wording on them. Got these from a guy in Champaign who bought them from a tire store that claimed to have mounted tires for the Challege Series. I also got a 17X11 in the deal, no scripting on it, odd thing was the safety bead was ground down on both sides.
